Work / Case study
SKIN1004 Centella
A spec film for SKIN1004’s Centella line. Made without a brief, to show how we would shoot a skincare product: skin, hands, warm light, and nothing else in the frame.
- Format
- 4K · 24 fps · 0:40
- Deliverables
- One spec film, ten stills
- Crew
- One creative lead, one day
- Client
- None. SKIN1004 was not involved.
Spec work is where a studio shows its hand. There is no client note to hide behind, so every choice on screen is ours: the model, the light, the pace, the cut. We picked a product we like and asked one question. What is the least this film needs to make you want to touch the bottle?
SKIN1004 was not involved and has not endorsed the film. It exists because we wanted a beauty piece in the reel that was ours from the first frame to the last, and because the product’s own story, a single plant extract, made a simple film the right film.
One idea, written down first
The core truth we agreed before the shoot: calm. Skincare films tend to rush, cutting between claims and close-ups. We did the opposite. One model, one light source, a warm backdrop, and a bottle that is always in the frame or about to enter it. If a shot did not read as calm, it was not in the film.

Three motifs
Three motifs carry the piece. The bottle held at the chin, so product and skin share the frame at the same scale. The bottle standing in sand, a nod to the plant’s origin and an excuse for texture. And hands: over an eye, around the glass, resting. Each gives the edit a place to return to, so the film feels composed rather than assembled.

One light, one colour that leads
Everything is lit from one side with a large soft source, the way you would light a portrait rather than a product. The backdrop is a hand-painted warm neutral that sits close to skin, so the amber of the serum is the only colour that leads. In the grade we protected skin first and let the background fall where it wanted.

Pace and sound
Forty seconds, sixteen cuts. Most shots hold for two to three seconds, longer than a beauty ad usually allows, because the hands and the breath do the work. Sound is close: glass, dropper, a breath. No voice-over. The product name appears once, on the label, in macro.

What a spec is for
Stills and motion came out of the same day and the same light, which is the point of the studio. Every frame on this page is pulled from the film. Nothing was reshot for stills.
